Some WiFi adapters that are not 100% compatible with the WinXP "Wireless Zero Configuration" (WZC) may experience dificulties to maintain a connecation to the default WLAN.
One scenario is the lost of connection with the default WLAN everytime a new WLAN is detected in the WiFi range.
To restore the connection, the user must open the WLAN network connections dialog, and reconnect manually to the default WLAN or any other available.
This is extremely inconvenient.
To avoid this behavior stop the "Wireless Zero Configuration" service:
- Start -> Control Panel (select "classic view") -> Administrative Tools -> Services
- Select "Wireless Zero Configuration" from the list -> Menu Action -> Properties
- Click "Stop" and then "OK"
You can configure this service not to start with the system:
- Start -> Control Panel (select "classic view") -> Administrative Tools -> Services
- Select "Wireless Zero Configuration" from the list -> Menu Action -> Properties
- Select "Disabled" from the "Startup type" list
- Click "OK"
NOTE: If you choose this option, NO connection to any WLAN will be stablished automatically at startup.
You must start it manually by opening the connection properties.
NOTE: More information here adding other workarounds:
- Install XP SP2
- Create a little batch to setup WZC at start up
- Disable the "IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network" under the "Authentication" tab of the Local Area Connection Properties
