  • Trouble to see the network and software firewalls:
You can use a software firewall in your machine if it's an stand alone machine connected to the Internet.
If you are in a LAN and want to access shared resources you have to tune up the firewall configuration.
Most of the times if you are in a LAN you are accessing the Internet through a unique connection shared by all the LAN.
If so the firewall should be running in the router or server that is handling the shared connection, thus you don't need a firewall in your local machine.
Then it is recommended in this cases to unisntall/disable all software firewalls in the local machine (Windows XP native firewall, Norton Security firewall, etc).
It can be a headache when you can't get access from a machine to the LAN shared resources, and that's just because the user has Windows firewall or other similar enabled, remember that usually Windows firewall is enabled in the setup by default!

  • Netbios (NetBEUI) & Windows XP: Can't integrate WinXP with older Windows using Netbios
Netbios (NetBEUI) & Windows XP: No es posible integrar WinXP con versiones previas de Windows usando Netbios
  • Windows XP Home and other Non-Professional editions: Can not join a domain.
These versions do not join a domain, the feature -presnet in the Pro edition- is disabled.
But it can be tweaked using X-setupPro (freeware that you can download here).
  • Windows XP Home and other Non-Professional editions: the system asks for user/password to access shared resources on the LAN.
It's the default behavior when the Windows user/pass of the user logged in the local machine does not match the shared folder user/password with permissions to access it.
You have to make both identical.
  • Windows XP Home and other Non-Professional editions: the system asks for user/password to access shared resources on the LAN even if my Windows local user/password is the same than that one of the shared resource!.
It should not happen but sometime it does and is annoying for the user.
The workaround is to map a drive to the shared resource (this solutions works for folders at least) via a script (.bat) that runs on startup (add it to the startup folder or the run key at the registry current user).
The script will include the path to the shared resource, user and password.
For a closer look to the command that does this (the net use command) check this reference.
  • Accessing printers via IP address with Win2K: when the printer/printserver renew the IP from the DHCP (printserver reset, etc), the IP in the port property of the Win printer must be updated. You need the new IP, one way to obtain it is printing a printer self-test page (start the printer pressing the online or other buttons simultaneously), many models like HP show the IP required to fix the problem.
